Introduction

The issue of the genocide in Darfur is a matter of international concern; and is also a significant issue in United States politics. Members of the different anti-genocide coalitions demanded within the last year that the Obama administration appoint a genocide task force. After a lot of campaigning, the Obama administration did create a task force. Though this is a good step, the task force has not been successful, and has not really accomplished anything. This is similar to the international reaction to the Darfur conflict, which frankly has been rather pathetic.  It would be incredibly easy for an international task force to end the genocide in Darfur, especially the United States, but so far none have put in the effort to save millions.
What continues to amaze me is how unaware large parts of the public really are about the issue of genocide. The amounts of apathy are massive, and completely awful. Though no one I have met supports the issue of genocide, and all say it is terrible, only small numbers of the population are actually doing anything to make a difference. The amazing thing is the smallest amount of money or aid can go a long way in the countries that are suffering from genocide. The smallest donations can provide donkeys and carts, or even firewood, which would be a huge help to these women. It is most often that women are attacked by the Janjaweed militia is when they are out gathering firewood or other supplies in an attempt to provide for their families.
While the US is involved in the Middle East in conflicts over oil, millions are suffering from the effects of genocide in Darfur. This is one place US should be involved, where basic human rights are being violated. Where families are torn apart, immense amounts of violence are occurring, rape is being used as a weapon of war, millions are displaced from their homes, and thousands are dying. If the US and other world powers would get involved to help end this issue, millions could be saved. People need to get involved and help out. There are so many ways we can become better educated about this conflict, and stand up for the victims of genocide to make a change.

  1. This is an interesting topic choice. It is a major concern right now for many people, and should be looked into more than it is, i agree with you on the fact that not that many people know about it, including me. i know the basic concepts, and what is happening, but i do not know why or how it started, or what is being done about it. i would question, do you plan on proposing something to do about it, or will you just be keeping people updated on what is happening currently? i would like to get involved with this in some way or another, because the more help that you get the better, i look forward to reviewing your topic in the future.

  2. Genocide is a very heated topic in both the political and social world. I feel like Americans are scared to get involved and don't actually know how to get involved and stop Genocide in other countries. I am interested in how you are going to approach this issue. I think you should spend time educating the bloggers about the history of genocide and what countries are actually involved in genocide. I think many people would be surprised to know how many countries are actually affected by genocide.

  3. I am interested in how the US will continue to assist those countries who are facing genocide. It really is a great problem that many in our country have overlooked. I see more about Lindsey Lohan in the news than about this catastrophic problem. It's kind of ridiculous that this can go so unnoticed in America. Sitting here right now I feel uninformed about the world around me. I wish the American news channels weren't so caught up in our stupid bollywood moments. Its turned our people into a conceited non-informed society. We think we're are the center of the world and the only place that matters is America. Wake up and smell the coffee America...

  4. Its true that thought most educated citizens are aware of the conflict, there are also many that no nothing other than the basics. I think my main goal will be to keep people updated on what is happening in the Darfur conflict, as I do not have enough knowledge of international policies or other information to propose exactly what the international community should be doing.

  5. I completely agree. With a huge range of incredibly important international issues, I wish the news was more focused on human rights violations, or other conflicts that were taking place in the world. I find the focus on celebrities or other trivial news completely ridiculous. Today's conceited society is a large reason as to why people are so uneducated, and why the international community is not more concerned or involved in the current conflict.
